The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed her interest in keeping the prices of the basic goods basket without increases, despite the rise in general inflation in the first half of October, which reached 4.69% annually. Sheinbaum aims to reach an agreement with entrepreneurs to contain inflation and asserted that stability in the prices of the basic goods basket has been achieved, thanks to the low cost of corn and the already defined guarantee prices.
In her morning conference, the leader mentioned the commitment to not increase the prices of gasoline, electricity, diesel, and LP gas in real terms. Efforts are underway to renew the 'Agreement to Combat Inflation and High Prices' presented in 2022 by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which seeks to reduce prices in collaboration with distribution and food companies.
The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported that inflation in the first half of October rose, mainly driven by a 9.66% year-on-year increase in agricultural products. However, Sheinbaum highlighted that the basic goods basket, composed of 24 products such as oil, rice, tuna, sugar, onion, and beans, has remained stable nationwide, with a maximum price of 979.1 pesos. The president assured that significant steps are being taken to reach a new agreement that contributes to controlling inflation and benefiting the population.
